Essay about The Outsiders

In the book The Outsiders a lot of character seem to grow up and come of age. I don't really think that in this book age is what matters. It's more about the events that happen to you and how these events change your life. I noticed that a lot of sad things happened in this book and afterwards the people involved seemed to grow up. Maybe after these terrible things happen the survivors have more responsibility. It's not even always death, sadness in general seems to make people mature and act older.

The main character of this book is called Ponyboy. His parents are dead and now he lives with his two older brothers Darry, and Soda. Ponyboy and Darry are always arguing and angry with each other. One day Ponyboy runs away with his best friend. When Ponyboy finally gets back to Darry two of his friends have died and everything seems different. When he sees Darry again he realizes how he has  enough problems without fighting with his brother. I think this shows maturity that Ponyboy was able to be the bigger person and stop fighting with his brother.

Another important character in this book was Johnny. He was Ponyboy's best friend. He had always been an innocent quiet kid untill one day he killed someone who was trying to drown Ponyboy. This experience really changed Johnny. Anyway, a few days after this while hiding from the police a building caught on fire with children in it. Johnny went into the building and was able to save all of the children but he lost his own life in the fire. Johnny had always been scared and quiet but after killing that kid he realized how precious life is and saved those children. Most kids  would have been to scared to do this but Johnny did it anyway.

There was one more very important character in the book, his name was Dally. He was areally tough kid that had been to prison a bunch of times.  People twice his size were afraid of him. When people looked at him they saw only hatrid. He was mean to everyone he met, it seemed like there was no one that he really cared about except Johnny. He would beat up everyone except Johnny. It was like he was the only thing that mattered to Dally. When Johnny died in the fire Dally killed himself. I guess it was like when Johnny died he realized all his hatrid wasn't going to get anything done. He realized that if you have nothing that you love then there isn't any reason to keep on living.

What I'm trying to say is that when terrible things happen to people they grow up. Most people would think that this is a good thing but I'm not sure. When people grow up they lose the innocence that children have. In the end though wether it's a good thing or not sad things kind of make people just more tough n general and this leads to maturity and coming of age.

Responce about Ind. Reading Book

Right now the book I'm reading is called Motherless Brooklyn. The main character in this book is named Lionel Essrog and he has tourettes syndrome. It makes him do compulsive things like cursing and poking things. Lionel is an orphan and all the people living around him are big and tough. Most people like him would try to stay hidden but having tourettes makes Lionel stand out.

It sounds kind of crazy but the tourettes kind of makes people like Lionel. People call him freak but I don't really think that they mean it in a bad way. They thinks he's brave to talk trash to people way bigger than he is. They aren't educated and I don't think that they even know what tourettes is. Lionel doesn't even know what tourettes is. No one ever tought him.

I don't know anyone that has tourettes but just from how they make it seem in the book, it sounds terrible. I think that the author gave Lionel tourettes for an important reason. Another thing the book talks about is if Lionel is so good at being a "detective"(he's an illegal detective) because of his tourettes or despite that he has tourettes. Most people would think that this is a disadvantage to Lionel but I think it helps him stay focused. It's like the tourettes is making him feel this need to solve every single one of the cases he takes. Also a lot of the characters seem very ignorant and think that just because he has tourettes that he's dumb. By the way he's illegal because he supposedly works in a car servive. They don't even own any cars to rent out.

Lionel is actually really smart. He had to be to survive his chidhood in a scary orphanage. Because of tourettes, sometimes Lionel cursed at the older, bigger, scarier kids. Somehow he always seemed to escape the orphanage without getting hurt too badly. He's smart enough to apologize to the older kids and act like they're so great. Now that they're all grown up and working together, he's their equal.

Tourettes syndrome has played a huge part in Lionel's life but he keeps going, living with tourettes and finding ways to deal with it. Even with tourettes, Lionel has never felt sorry for himself and he's even been able to help some people by working for a detective agency. He's had a rough life and he still finds ways to help others. People should give Lionel a little more respect and treat him better because he's just like an every day hero.

One blog that I really liked was Tomin's. All of his entries seemed really deep and they made me think (especially the poems.) Also, all of the entries used really good vocabulary. The entries that weren't poems really long and I coulsee that he elaborated a lot. All of the poems made me think. I thought Done was an interesting one.

Another blog that I liked a lot was Gabriel's. Some of his entries are really funny which I like but he also has spme serious entries that I also liked. The Mona Lisa haiku was funny. I thought all of the poems were pretty good.

Responce to Poem

We read the poem about the Jordans in class yesterday and so far, it's my favorite poem that we've read in class so I'm responding to it. At first when we read it Iliked it (because it rhymed.) But then, when I actually thought about the words and the message that thepoem sent, it seemed kind of creepy. Even if the things in the poem didn't actually happen, it still seems creepy that someone would kill an innocent person for Jordans. The main character didn't even no why he wanted the Jordans. It seems to me that the poets point of this poem is to say that we live in a terrible world, where people are greedy and selfsh, they care about no one but themselves. Is this really true? I don't think that people are that bad. It least most of the time unless they're crazy or something like that. I hope there aren't many people like that out in the real world.

Responce to Artwork

Since we had to respond to a piece of art I responded to the mona lisa by Leonardo Di Vinci. I know that this piece of art is really famous so I wonder what my opinion will be in comparrison to the opinion of important art critics. I got the picture from http://www.metmuseum.org/worksofart/collectiondatabase. I notice that mona lisa kind of has this annoyed look on her face. She also looks like she's stressed out and tired. I think that she's had some bad things happen to her, I wonder what her life was like before the painting.

The background of the painting looks kind of dark and gloomy. I think it means that outside of the painting, bad things were going on at that time. The picture makes it look like Mona Lisa is almost like the queen of whatever place the background is. Even though things look really gloomy in the picture, it looks like Mona Lisa kind of has a little bit of a smile. Maybe things are going to get better.
